The Marathon des Sables is ranked by the Discovery Channel as the toughest footrace on earth.
Imagine yourself in the Sahara desert with nothing but rolling sand dunes for miles. A fine dust kicks up when you plough your feet through the sand. It's so warm that your sweat evaporates before you even feel it. Your lungs feel parched and dry. The temperature today is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of your brain is screaming and begging you to stop, right now, to throw in the towel, but the other part of your brain is stronger. The other part of your brain knows that if you complete the last stage of the Marathon des Sables, you will have run the equivalent of five and a half marathons in five or six days, a total distance of some 251 km – 156 miles.

To make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.
Scope is a disability equality charity providing practical information and emotional support through their helpline, online presence, employment services and community initiatives; whilst also campaigning to create a fair society for all.
Every £9 raised could pay for a call to our helpline or £25 could pay for the advice from a trained professional in their online community.
This is a common concern but once you get signed up and start fundraising the team at Scope will have plenty of tips for reaching (and smashing!) the target. If you think you're going to struggle, the best thing to do is have a chat with them as each charity has its own approach.
Just click 'Find out more now' and fill in the enquiry form to get their contact details - if you put your question in, someone from their team will get back to you.
