The Marathon des Sables is ranked by the Discovery Channel as the toughest footrace on earth.
Imagine yourself in the Sahara desert with nothing but rolling sand dunes for miles. A fine dust kicks up when you plough your feet through the sand. It's so warm that your sweat evaporates before you even feel it. Your lungs feel parched and dry. The temperature today is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of your brain is screaming and begging you to stop, right now, to throw in the towel, but the other part of your brain is stronger. The other part of your brain knows that if you complete the last stage of the Marathon des Sables, you will have run the equivalent of five and a half marathons in five or six days, a total distance of some 251 km – 156 miles.

We exist to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.
We’re the disability equality charity. We'll be here until we achieve a society where all disabled people enjoy fairness and equality. We provide emotional support and practical advice to disabled people and their loved ones whenever they need it. Collectively, we use our power to change attitudes and end injustice. And we campaign relentlessly to create a fairer society.
