Arguably the finest castle in the series – Lough Cutra – provides a fitting backdrop for the curtain raiser of the Castle Triathlon Series.
This first race sets the scene for a competitive and fun series, hosted within the beautiful grounds and surrounding area of stunning South Galway. What’s more, the race coincides with a Bank Holiday in the UK and it is also the first weekend of the UK school half term, making it an ideal break for sporty families.
All of the races at Lough Cutra Castle kick-off by launching into an open-water swim in the lake, transitioning into a bike route which circumnavigates Lough Cutra itself. The half iron gauntlet cycle takes in the beautiful Burren national park.
The countryside surrounding Lough Cutra contains evidence of a history dating back to the Irish-Celtic mythology of the Tuatha Dé Danaan.
Old churches, cells and monasteries are prolific in the area, with some of the islands on the lake containing the remnants of stone altars.
The history of the actual estate can be traced back as far as 866 A.D. when the ruined church of Beagh was sacked by the Danes and war raged through the district for nearly 1,000 years.
The Castle itself was built during the Gothic revival period and is idyllically situated overlooking the Estate’s 1,000 acre lake (the largest privately owned lake in Europe), home to the open-water swim of the Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon.
Triathlon Ireland has awarded Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon the Sprint Super Series on Saturday 27th May 2017.
It’s going to be a Super Saturday at this year’s Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon on May 27th with the confirmation that the stunning Castle in Galway will play host to Ireland’s top age groupers as they battle it out in the first event of the 2017 Sprint Super Series, the only event of the Super Series in the West of Ireland.
The Super Series now in its 3rd year in Ireland caters for the appetite, skill and speed of the fastest athletes over the sprint distance triathlon of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km. Racing on closed roads in a draft legal environment, chasing points, it’s the only series in the country that allows this type of triathlon racing.
With an increasing number of athletes qualifying to race at this level the Lough Cutra Sprint Super Series Race is expected to attract a large field of Ireland’s top athletes for the opening race of the season in the Series which will have a prize pot of €2,000 for the top 5 Lough Cutra Super Series male and female athletes.
In 2017 Lough Cutra, for the fourth year running will see The Gauntlet, a middle-distance race, push competitors to their limit via stunning 1.9km swim, 96km bike ride and 21km run.
This race distance had a hugely successful launch across the Series in 2014 with over 1000 sign ups. Since then it has gone from strength to iron strength doubling in size with hardened triathletes and newcomers to the triathlon side-by-side on the start line. In 2016 we were proud to host the Gauntlet as part of the Triathlon Ireland Vodafone National Series.v
